  • The word Onyx derives from the Greek meaning 'veined gem'
  • Pure black onyx is the most famous variety, but not as common as onyx with banded colors
  • Onyx contains bands of colors of white, tan, and brown
  • Sardonyx is a variant in which the colored bands are sard (shades of red) rather than black
  • Many semi-precious gemstones are in fact forms of chalcedony including Agate, Onyx, Sardonyx, Carnelian and the Bloodstone. A chalcedony with alternating black and white bands is often used in making cameos. Chalcedony is form of silica which is composed of very fine intergrowths of the minerals quartz and moganite and has a waxy lustre and might be semitransparent or translucent.
